Obstetrics and Gynecology Fellowship Program

CURE has instituted an OB/GYN training and treatment fellowship program, qualifying Afghan doctors with the most modern obstetric and gynecological knowledge and techniques. Annually, five OB/GYN fellows from Kabul and other rural provinces are trained for one year in order to upgrade their knowledge and skills. This ensures that Afghan doctors not only deliver quality care to their own communities, but that they are also able to assist in training others. This dramatically improves the standard of care and will bring about a reduction in maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality throughout the country.

General Medicine Residency Program

The General Medicine framework and philosophy of care introduces an effective approach to disease management that serves the entire population, both urban and rural, male and female, adult and child, while enhancing the Afghan medical and emergency response network. As evidence-based General Medicine professionals are able to identify and properly respond to the critical health needs of Afghans, the over-dependence on unqualified or over-qualified medical professionals for treatment will diminish.

This program prepares young Afghan doctors to respond to nationwide health crises through a General Medicine framework modeled after US and other developed nations medical training programs. General Medicine doctors are tested, selected and trained to provide care to a broad range of patients, which include:

  1. pregnant women
  2. children under five
  3. emergency cases
  4. adults
  5. specialty patients such as those needing orthopedic, general and plastic surgery

As a part of this training program, specialist instructors provide supervision, teaching and oversight to ensure all skills are developed in line with best practices in the field. Women and children make up the majority of a surgeon's caseload, and emphasis will be placed on skills related to treatment for these target groups. Some burn and plastic surgery patients will also be treated.

After successful evaluation, CURE will provide formal certification to the doctors so that they may serve as Specialist Trainers for General Surgery within Afghanistan.

Tissue Pathology Residency

Services in general surgery and gynecology require reliable and prompt pathological diagnosis. However, pathology services in Afghanistan, with a population of 28 million, are very limited in both quantity and quality.

To date, CURE International Hospital offers the only functional pathology services in Afghanistan. Continued development of this department will support accurate diagnosis, proper disease management, and swift communication related to disease surveillance.

Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship

This is an anticipated program.

There are few, if any, properly trained plastic surgeons to cope with the high volume of patients suffering from ailments caused by torture, household accidents, burns and other often improperly treated deformities. CURE plans to offer a reconstructive surgical training fellowship related specifically to hand, ear and nose deformities.

Surgical Residency Program

Surgical Residency training program is a three year competency based training program. CURE Kabul works to reduce the suffering of patients who need competent surgical care throughout Afghanistan by training physicians who are capable of practicing up-to-date surgery and who are able to function as leaders for the training of others. Surgical residents learn to recognize critical and emergency conditions, provide appropriate procedural interventions, make appropriate referrals to other government hospitals and report findings to appropriate facilities, government or otherwise. Strong departments in pathology, anesthesia and ancillary support services, along with a steady patient volume, provide a unique learning environment for these doctors while serving at CURE International Hospital.
