Kenya Orthopedic Residency
The orthopedic training program at the AIC-CURE Children's Hospital of Kenya has recently been certified by the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa. It is the only orthopedic residency program in Kenya and is widely recognized as one of the leading orthopedic surgical training programs in East Africa.
Malawi Orthopedic Residency
Since 2002, in accordance with the curriculum of COSECSA, College of Surgeons of Central and Southern Africa, covering 8 countries, Beit CURE International Hospital of Malawi has operated a successful residency program. Trainees have enjoyed the rich mix of elective pediatric and adult orthopedic surgery, including total joint replacements, undertaken at Beit CURE Malawi, as well as the active research proram.
In addition to this Africa oriented residency program, a senior resident for the United Kingdom works at the hospital, rotated on an annually rolling basis. This training is recognized by the Royal College of Surgeons in the United Kingdom and Beit CURE Malawi is the only facility on the continent of Africa that is recognized for the purposes of training British orthopedic surgeons.
Malawi Orthopedic Clinical Officer Training
Since 2002, CURE has been responsible for the continued operation of the Orthopedic Clinical Officer Training Program, which trains individuals across the entire country of Malawi. This course provides Clinical Officers, medical personnel who have had three years of clinical medicine training, with eighteen months of specialist orthopedic training. Participants are sent by the Ministry of Health of Malawi and other mission organizations to partake in the training program. At the end of each course the participants are each equipped to manage basic orthopedic cases, including clubfoot treatment using the Ponseti method. More than ninety Orthopedic Clincial Officers have been trained since 2002 and have all remained in the country to serve the people of Malawi.
Malawi General Orthopedic Training
Senior hospital staff are involved in undergraduate training and examination of medical students in the College of Medicine, adjoining the Beit CURE Malawi. Many staff are also deployed to teach on Operating Room Personnel courses sponsored by the internationally renowned AO Foundation. Since 2002, the AO Foundation has funded courses hosted by Beit CURE Malawi, attracting participants from across the region and utilizing many CURE staff members as tutors. Beit CURE Malawi staff have traveled as far as South Africa and Europe to teach as senior tutors for courses hosted by the AO Foundation. Some popular courses include, Operating Room Personnel and Principles for Doctors training.
