Since 2004, CURE has been treating Honduran Children through clinics at a local government hospital in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. CURE was also able to treat children by regularly sending teams of American physicians, nurses, physical therapists and dentists to Honduras to provide care and perform surgery. During this time, CURE provided medical care for more than 4,800 children and performed more than 600 surgeries.
However, to more effectively address the needs of disabled Honduran children, it became apparent that CURE needed a standalone facility. In 2007 that dream became a reality as construction began on the CURE Honduras hospital. The hospital began seeing patients in January 2009 and saw nearly 800 patients within the first two months!
Eighty percent of Honduran families cannot afford to pay for health care. CURE is committed to providing that care for the children of these families, both in San Pedro Sula and throughout the country.
"We couldn't be more proud of this wonderful CURE hospital. Without exaggeration, I believe we have the best-equipped orthopedic surgical facility in Honduras, and possibly in Central America. With this hospital we can provide year-round elective orthopedic care to many needy children," says Dr. Ned Schwentker, CURE Honduras pediatric orthopedic surgeon.
