At the CURE clinic, young mothers are perched everywhere, all cradling frail babies with painfully swollen heads, anxiously waiting to see the doctor. The room is crammed full but it’s quiet.

Then, in walks Regina Akello. The bubbly seven-year-old waltzes around the room like she owns the place, traveling from mother to mother, telling jokes and making silly faces. Soon the entire room is laughing.

It is more than her jokes that bring the women joy, though. You see, Regina is a success story, the rebuttal to everything they’ve been told by their neighbors – that their children are doomed, worthless, cursed.

For these mothers, she is hope.

Only a few years earlier, Regina was just as sick with hydrocephalus as their own children are. At four years old, she could not walk, hold her head up or even speak. It was her surgery at CURE that saved her life.
